How Creative Are You in Teaching Your Class was a contest organised by Marshall Cavendish Education. Four winners from the contest were given an opportunity to attend the bi-annual conference, Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference 2017organised by National Institute of Education Singapore (NIE).

In this second instalment of the 4-part series, Mr Roel R. Maraya shares how he used Science Matters and Biology Matters textbooks in his science lessons at Korean International School, Philippines.

Amidst the heavy workload of a typical teacher, Mr Roel R. Maraya, Head Teacher at Korean International School, Philippines, only has one priority – to refine and safeguard the educational well-being of every student that walks into his class. For this to occur, Mr Roel sees the importance of getting to know his students on a personal level, while keeping in mind the role of a teacher. 

Mr Roel's interaction with students reveals that most of them often display negative attitudes towards learning. "It's human nature," he says. This motivates him to make learning fun. He creates a classroom environment where students feel free to participate, ask questions, and voice opinions; an environment where every student is heard and listened to, an environment where they have opportunities to create, an environment where students are constantly appreciated and intentionally corrected. According to Mr Roel, this ideal environment can be created by choosing the appropriate academic tools that are necessary and adaptive to the learning capacities of his students. His choice of learning tools is the science textbook series by Marshall Cavendish Education

He said, "These materials gave his students the opportunity to discuss, react and argue about recent scientific findings that are germane to our individuality as a member of this fast growing world." They also provide a progressive learning framework that targets to improve students' scientific skills, i.e.: analysing, experimenting, interpreting, collaborating, etc... Complementing the materials, online activities are also integrated into his lessons.
