By Dr. Ho Boon Tiong

School can die if 21st century teachers teach 20th century pedagogies in 19th century settings (the old paradigm). Propel yourselves in what makes a World-class school through E.D.U (education):

  • Environment (Good School) – enhance learning environments to maximize student education through the use of technology.
  • Diversity (Good Curriculum) – employ high-yield teaching pedagogies.
  • Unity (Good Teachers) – equip teachers to build a strong positive growth culture.
10:30 am - 11:00 am Tea Break

Note that the 3 sessions will take place concurrently.

English: Introduction to Inquiry-based Learning in the Primary English Classroom
By Ms. Josephine Phay

Educators and industry players both agree that the world which our young learners will eventually enter will require them to do much more than memorise facts or follow a set of instructions. This is why inquiry-based learning, with its emphasis on student-centred learning, problem solving, and authentic tasks, is an important mode of learning, even for our youngest learners. This two-hour workshop introduces participants to key ideas associated with inquiry-based learning, and provides opportunities for participants to begin brainstorming ideas for inquiry-based lessons which they might want to run in their own classrooms.

Mathematics: Problem Solving and The Use of Heuristics
By Dr. Brandon Oh

In this session, participants will learn what problem solving entails. Participants will learn through solving non-routine problems with appropriate heuristics. Various heuristics will be shared with an emphasis on the Model Method. The Part-Whole, including the Working Backwards and Comparison models, will be elaborated on with examples taken from the MCE Mathematics series. The use of Pòlya’s (1971) four stages of problem solving to guide pupils through problem solving will also be discussed.

Science: Using MCE 3C and 1E design for Effective Science Teaching
By Dr. Ho Boon Tiong

In this session, we will look at the MCE pedagogical design using 3C and 1E to engage student learning. How teachers can capture student interest, help them construct scientific understanding and consolidate their learning. We will also explore how to enrich science learning beyond the MCE Cambridge curriculum.
