MCE Global Conference 2025 Philippines

About the Conference

What makes a world-class school? There is no single universal definition for world-class school but we can explore the elements that are necessary for world-classness. World-class schools often discuss key factors such as competencies, innovation and characteristics of learners (Educators/ Students) to thrive in an ever-changing global economy.

This year’s MCE Global Conference, themed "Good to Great: What Makes a World-Class School," highlights Marshall Cavendish Education's exceptional role in guiding the Ministry of Education in Singapore and globally toward unparalleled success. Don't miss this opportunity for a transformative day of professional development, where you can dive into MCE’s innovative pedagogy, explore MCE’s Education Model (Good Curriculum, Good School, Good Teachers) and discover how our top-tier teaching and learning materials can elevate your classroom to world-class standards. Join us and unlock the secrets to delivering extraordinary lessons that inspire and engage.

Plenary Session: Education in the 21 Century - Insights from PISA

Education technologies can transform how students learn because they offer them new opportunities to explore complex phenomena and to create digital representations of their ideas. Despite the advantages, students lack foundational skills and attitudes necessary to become active and autonomous users of technology for confronting open-ended, real-world problems. This session aims to provide educators with 2 competencies emphasised in PISA 2025 “Learning in the Digital World”; Self-Regulated Learning & Computational and Scientific Inquiry practices and how MCE resources can assist educators in developing these 2 competencies.

Math: Problem Solving and The Use of Heuristics*
By Dr. Norhuda Musa

This session aims to assist students in solving non-routine problems and apply heuristics appropriately. Schools worldwide have been promoting the use of Pòlya’s (1971) four stages of problem solving to guide pupils through problem solving. He described mathematical problem solving as comprising of four stages, namely, Understanding, Planning, Carrying Out the Plan, and Looking Back.

To increase its efficacy, Lee (2008) proposed adapting a metacognitive questioning scheme – the “Problem Wheel” to facilitate and encourage pupils to think aloud through the ‘Understanding’ and ‘Planning’ stages in a structured manner. This provides pupils with a scheme and gets them to become more aware and in control of their problem-solving process, i.e. being more metacognitive. Hence, instead of solving a problem impulsively, we aim to encourage pupils to be more aware of their thought processes by discussing what they would do to solve a problem.

Various heuristics will be shared but the emphasis will be on the Model Method. The Part-Whole including the Working Backwards and Comparison models will be elaborated on with examples taken from the Cambridge Primary Mathematics (second edition).

Science: Applying 5E Instructional Approach and Inquiry-based Learning in a Science Classroom*
By Dr. Turner Lam

5E Instructional Approach plays an instrumental role in developing critical thinking in a Science classroom. In this session, participants will understand critical thinking and how it can be integrated in a 5E lesson plan through a hands-on activity. After the session, participants will define critical thinking through perspectives & assumptions and how leverage on MCE textbooks to build upon critical thinking in their classrooms.

*Subject breakout sessions will take place concurrently

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm Lunch
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm Closing and Prize Presentation

Our Speakers

Norhuda Musa

Dr. Norhuda Musa

Norhuda Musa (Huda) obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Mathematics Education) from Curtin University, Western Australia in 2014 and Master in Education (Mathematics Education) from Nanyang Technological University/ National Institute of Education, Singapore in 2008. Dr. Huda has over 20 years of experience teaching Mathematics in a Singapore school and has been actively championing the use of current mathematics practices in Singapore schools and sharing these practices to teachers locally and internationally. She has presented, on several occasions, at World Association of Lesson Study (WALS) and Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) and conducted training workshops to teachers and school leaders across Asia. Through her sharing, she aims to equip teachers with good mathematical teaching skills, hence empowering them to deliver impactful lessons in their classrooms, thus bringing out the potential in every child.
