Uplifting Muhammadiyah Group's Digital Learning with Artificial Intelligence

Summary

The Muhammadiyah Group is one of the largest networks in Indonesia, supporting over 2 million students nationwide. MCE has worked with key teams in Muhammadiyah since 2025 to bridge AI and coding into the teaching and learning experience across its schools. The education system in Indonesia is aligning with global trends by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the national curriculum. For the academic year of 2025 – 2026, Indonesian primary and secondary schools started rolling out AI and coding as elective subjects for students.

Challenge

Given the volume of students that the Muhammadiyah Group supports across Indonesia, implementing key changes across schools and cities would require extensive effort in the first phase. MCE had to understand key metrics of each region and provide an onboarding journey for teachers and students to ensure they are guided throughout.

Solution

MCE curated a collection of AI and Coding resources especially for the group. These platforms provide a comprehensive curriculum that allows students to understand gaps in their understanding and a personalised AI journey that would strengthen skills such as writing, reading, and speaking alongside learning foundational coding skills. MCE also conducted a robust training programme for Muhammadiyah educators

Impact

This partnership first started with a collaboration between Marshall Cavendish Education and Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Region, for a pilot project of our AI and coding solution for 21 Muhammadiyah schools in the Yogyakarta region.

This represents a significant step towards nurturing students with digital solutions that not only complement teaching and learning in the classrooms but also allow them to explore critical skills that would prepare them for the future.

Since then, the Muhammadiyah Group or Muhammadiyah has begun to successfully implement a curated set of AI and coding resources for the following provinces.

East Java province
Yogyakarta province
North Sumatera province
East Kalimantan province
South Sulawesi province

Teachers have successfully integrated the new resources and provide an adequate bridging system for their students thus helping the Muhammadiyah Group to achieve academic success.
