About the Competition

Are you looking to transform your coding skills into real solutions to tackle real issues? Following the success of its first edition – Marshall Cavendish Education, in collaboration with Koding Next, is delighted to present the International Environment Coding Competition (IECC) 2026.

With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as the core principles of the competition, IECC aims to inspire young talents globally to develop innovative coding solutions to address environmental challenges and promote sustainability – combining modern technology with empathy, awareness, and relevance.

In this edition of IECC, our focus area is UNSDG 11 Sustainable Cities & Communities, which seeks to create resilient cities that are safe, inclusive, and sustainable for all settlements and communities. The central theme is Code the City, where you will become the architects of our future. IECC not only cultivates coding skills in participants but also encourages them to use their skills in practical ways to address real-world needs, creating a meaningful and positive impact in their communities, while gaining international exposure alongside other participants.

• 8-year-old IECC 2025 participant Ethan Reber’s idea was brought to life in the ‘Where Prosperity Blooms’ game featured as part of Geneco’s campaign, showcasing the power of thoughtful gestures in helping life flourish.

• The game was featured in an exhibition from 26 January to 1 February 2026, where each gameplay was pledged towards supporting the Singapore Herbarium, as well as $15,000 to the Npark’s registered charity Garden City Fund, to aid digitalisation efforts to create Southeast Asia’s largest database of digital plant specimens by 2027.

Recommended for participants between 7 to 12 years old.

U17 Category
Ages 17 & Under: Roblox Studio
(Text-Based Coding)

Recommended for participants between 13 to 17 years old.

Please note the following:

1. The age cap is a limit but the recommended ages are a suggestion. For example, a 14-year-old may not participate in the U12 category but an 8-year-old may participate in the U17 category if they wish to do so.

2. Age is calculated based on the participants’ age as of 31 Dec 2026.

3. Participants will be judged against competitors of the same category. For example, a 9-year-old participant who chooses to participate in the U17 category will be competing against others in the U17 category, and not the U12 category.

GLOBAL ROUND 1: PROJECTS

Using Scratch 3.0/Roblox Studio, participants are given 3 hours to develop a game project that addresses at least 1 challenge detailed in the problem statement, and propose a solution based on at least 1 of the 4 theme topics. Participants will then present their proposed solution to a panel of judges to explain its feasibility and how it solves the identified problems for target users.

Bonus Points (10%) Theme: Botanical Biodiversity (Presented by Geneco) Conservation is a community-based effort to safeguard our natural habitats. Bonus points will be awarded to projects that can meaningfully incorporate Botanical Biodiversity and demonstrate how its technology and innovation can contribute to protecting and enhancing botanical life in urban environments. Examples include adding flora-inspired design elements, promoting green urban planning, showcasing futuristic urban horticulture etc. More details on the grading rubric will be shared in the Project Brief on 2 November 2026.

Theme: Code the City

The main aim of UNSDG 11 is to create resilient cities that are safe, inclusive, and sustainable for all settlements and communities.

Under the overall competition theme, participants are to develop solutions based on the 4 theme topics:

The top 20 participants advancing from Global Round 1 will compete in a timed debugging challenge to identify and fix the errors in an existing erroneous program to produce the expected output and ensure the program runs correctly.

Participants will be given access to Future Classroom, an innovative cloud-based AI learning platform made by Koding Next, which contains lessons on Scratch and Roblox Studio. Through the platform, participants can learn to coding, animation, and game creation through interactive and hands-on projects.

All IECC Participants will enjoy a one-year access to Future Classroom. Access to Future Classroom includes the following:

Scratch & RAISE Playground

Explore coding and AI by building games, animations, and interactive projects with Scratch and RAISE Playground. Learn visual block programming, enhance projects with AI extensions, and create games, animations, and interactive experiences that solve real-world problems.

Roblox Studio

Design, build, and program your own Roblox games using Roblox Studio. Students will create game worlds, implement game mechanics, and develop interactive gameplay experiences inspired by real-world game development.

AI-powered Web Apps

Build AI-powered web applications using Python. Students will learn the basics of Python and how Python and AI can be used together to create useful web applications that solve real-world problems.

FAQ

Is this an individual or group competition?

This is an individual competition. Each participant is required to complete their own project.

What does the competition fee entail?

The competition fee includes entry into IECC 2026, an exclusive year-long access to Future Classroom, lunch for participants, learning journey (including 1 accompanying parent for each participant), and a buffet lunch during the awards ceremony.

Does the competition fee cover travel expenses?

No, the competition entry does not include the participant's personal travel expenses such as flight, accommodation, travel insurance and shopping. All participants are required to make their own travel arrangement for this competition.

Do you have a recommended hotel?

Can I accompany my child for the competition?

Parents are not allowed inside the lecture theatre when the participants are taking part in their competition.

Is lunch provided during the 3-day programme?

Lunch will be provided for all participants taking part in the competition. Buffet lunch will be available to both the participants and parents/guardians accompanying them on 29 November at the Award Ceremony.

Can I meet my child during the lunch break or bring them out for lunch?

Yes, you can meet your child during the lunch break, but it is not advisable to bring them out for lunch as the lunch break is only 1 hour.

Will there be photography and videography at the event?

Yes, there will be photography and videography.

Is an accompanying adult a mandatory requirement for this event?

All participants are strongly encouraged to travel with adult company. We recommend either a participating school’s teacher or their respective parents to accompany the participants. However, it will not be a mandatory requirement.

As an accompanying adult, can I join the event?

Parents and teachers are not allowed to sit in for the competition rounds on 27 and 28 November. Parents may choose to sit and wait for them around the area. Alternately, they can drop off the participants during registration and return when the competition has concluded to pick them up.

However, we welcome you to join us for our lunch and awards ceremony on 29 November 2026.

As an accompanying adult, can I join the Learning Journey?

Yes, the competition fee will include the admission of the participant and 1 accompanying adult of the participant.

If you have additional family members who are interested to join the learning journey on 29 November 2026. Simply include the add-on learning journey option during check out at a fee of SGD 35 per pax.

Terms and Conditions

1. Marshall Cavendish Education is the organiser of the International Environmental Coding Competition (IECC).
2. All information shared to us will follow Marshall Cavendish Education's data protection and privacy statements.
3. Winners will be informed via email or social media messenger depending on the information given.
4. Winners will be selected by the Organiser's panel of judges and the decision is final.
5. All submissions for the competition are at the risk of the Contestant and in the event that there are technical difficulties experienced arising out of the internet or from any associated equipment or internet security is compromised, the Organiser may at its sole and absolute discretion disqualify the entire entry and shall not accept any liability doing so.
6. The prize is as stated and is non-transferable and not-for-sale. No cash alternatives will be offered. If due to circumstances beyond the Organiser’s control, the Organiser is unable to provide the stated prize or any part thereof, the Organiser reserves the right to substitute the prize with an item of equal or greater value, to be determined at the Organisers’ sole discretion.
7. Late submission will be automatically void.
8. The registration / competition fee is non-refundable or exchangeable for products or services.

Preliminary Round Project Submission

1	Code a game project on Scratch or Roblox which raises awareness or offers a creative solution to one real-world environmental issue of your choice. The issue needs to be linked a United Nations SDG 13 Climate Action or SDG 15 Life on Land. *Bonus points are given to students which focus on the concept of blooming flora (see Grading Rubrics).
2	Write a project description explaining the game’s background of not more than 100 words.

Bonus Points Theme: Blooming Flora (Presented by Geneco) Conservation is a community-based effort to safeguard our natural habitats. Bonus points will be awarded to projects that incorporate the concept of blooming flora to show the vibrancy and importance of our biodiversity, made possible through collective efforts. Examples include integrating floral elements into your visuals, drawing on the blooming concept to shape your design, showcasing community efforts that protect and care for nature, etc.		10%

Participants will be given access to Future Classroom, an innovative cloud-based AI learning platform made by Koding Next, which contains lessons on Scratch and Roblox. Through the platform, participants can learn coding, animation, and game creation through interactive and hands-on projects.

IECC participants will enjoy a one-year access to Future Classroom Lite.

Access to Future Classroom Lite includes 5 lessons on Scratch or Roblox based on their registered category and discussion forums, where participants can ask trainers questions and share their ideas with others.

IECC participants will enjoy a one-year access to Future Classroom Lite worth SGD 50.

Top 20 participants will advance from Global Round 1 to compete in the hackathon, where participants are given 2 hours to complete 2 tasks, involving

Developing a program based on the given problem instructions, input/output requirements, and expected results.
Debugging an existing program containing errors by identifying and fixing the errors to produce the expected output.

Theme: AI for Innovations

In the final round, participants are required to code an interactive game project that demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence can drive innovation or present a solution to address an environmental issue. The chosen issue should relate to one or both UN SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land, and the project should be supported by real data or research insights.

Sample Project Ideas

AI Weather Forecaster: Uses simulated sensors or data to predict rainfall and provide early warnings to prevent floods.
AI Drone Network for Forest Fire Detection: Simulates drones that detect and contain wildfires using AI logic.

Platform Guidelines
Scratch / RAISE Playground: For students participating in the Scratch category, please use RAISE Playground to code your game project. RAISE Playground is a specialised version of Scratch that includes optional AI extensions, which participants may use to enhance their projects. Do rest assured that the user interface and user experience is similar to the original Scratch platform.

Roblox: For students participating in the Roblox category, please continue to use Roblox Studio to code your game project.

SCRATCH
Participants will use RAISE Playground to design their game project. RAISE Playground is a specialised version of Scratch designed to teach AI and robotics concepts. Create a game project with interactive elements that highlights one specific environmental problem and showcases an AI-powered solution supported by real data or facts from research.

ROBLOX
Participants will use Roblox Studio to design and build an Eco Smart City. Create a simulation or interactive experience in Roblox Studio that showcases how an AI-powered Eco Smart City operates sustainably—optimizing energy use, reducing pollution and improving quality of life, supported by real data or research insights.
