Singapore – Marshall Cavendish Education (MCE) and Learners Connection Pte Ltd hosted the 5th Visual Spatial Mathlympics, drawing more than 1,000 Singapore students to test their mathematical abilities against their peers nationwide. The competition saw an increase in registration, jumping almost 10% since its previous run in 2025.

The 5th Visual Spatial Mathlympics (VSM) is a concept competition for primary school students featuring carefully curated questions centred around the theme of Visual Spatial Intelligence and Mathematics. According to Dr Richard Kraft at Otterbein University, visual-spatial intelligence is a learner’s ability to think about the world in multiple dimensions and is used to navigate their way around, comprehending mental images of objects and spaces. The competition was created on the foundation of allowing Singapore students to gain exposure to diverse concepts and utilise more skill sets outside the classroom.

Visual-spatial ability is part of the brain’s executive functions, the set of high-level cognitive skills that act as your brain's control centre, allowing you to make better decisions about unexpected or difficult situations.1

35 primary schools and 2 international schools participated in this year’s edition of VSM, with Tao Nan School emerging as the Champion School, with the greatest number of students receiving the Gold Distinction Award.

“Going beyond the results, our aim in MCE is to allow students to explore different platforms that can expand their skillsets and ability to understand complex situations outside of their classroom and home environments. Building a nation of learners who enjoy learning and exploring helps them to master 21st-century competencies and navigate the world more confidently,” Lim Soon Jinn, Head of Marshall Cavendish Education.
